Understanding Multi-Level Commissions
"Maddening, exhausting, and fascinating," That's how Mark finds multi-level network marketing—
and has been doing so for nearly 30 years. He's the Founder, President and CEO of InfoTrax Systems,
one of the industry's premiere "back office" and data-base service providers. Short story: without
guys like Mark and his people, mlm-ers don't get paid. Imagine what happened in mlm back
before computers and their sophisticated, powerful comp plan software… In this
Session, Mark tells us what that was like. And he poses some profound and probing questions as
well, such as: Have you noticed that all the billion-dollar companies are stair-step breakaway
plans, yet no new companies use it… and haven't for years. How come?
In this Session, we
explore the role of the commission plan, how it motivates the distributors and generates
business-building behavior in the field. We'll speak about good plans and not so, what
percentage payouts make sense and what the men and women in the field need to understand
about their commission structures to have their business go and keep growing. Not sure about
"maddening or exhausting," but "fascinating" for sure.

Crossing the MLM Desert
The secret is for companies to make their desert hard enough to cross so that only those who
are serious about the business will cross it, but not so hard that everyone dies along the
way. It's a fragile balance yet critically important!

The Three Proven Commission Plans
The Breakaway, Hybrid Uni-level, and Binary Commission Plans are all three great plans in
the MLM world, but are fundamentally very different mindsets. They represent three totally
different ball games with their own specific rules and regulations.

About the Master
Prior to founding InfoTrax Systems in 1998, a company focused on delivering a complete, integrated software platform for the direct selling industry, Rawlins spent 18 years in executive positions at 20/21 Software, Inc. He ultimately became the company's CEO. He and his team delivered early solutions for telephone-based order processing systems, credit card authorization and acceptance systems, and Internet-based order entry and distributor communication tools.
Mark's knowledge of commission plans comes from the inside: "I've worked in the middle of the fastest growing and fastest dying companies in the business," he says. "I've seen all kinds of growth patterns. As a consultant, I've even been given beds at client companies while we worked through many nights on some of the problems that come with exponential growth."
Rawlins has a unique perspective on the network marketing industry, which he finds, "maddening, exhausting, and fascinating": "I like the fun and excitement of network marketing companies. I enjoy watching the operations, even the details—like seeing the checks being printed. I like writing software that solves the problems I see cropping up. I enjoy having a hand in finding and conquering all kinds of mistakes in setting up commission plans. After all, an intelligent plan for distributor payout is at the heart of network marketing success."
Mark spearheaded The Symposium Group, a group of network marketing industry professionals, who hosts a bi-annual Symposium to train direct selling executives and start-up companies. For more information, see TheSymposiumGroup.com
Mark Rawlins studied computer science at Utah State University. He is a respected presenter and has been published dozens of times including his 2002 book entitled Understanding Multi-Level Commissions and Their Role in a Successful Company.
